The cuisine of Oman is a mixture of several other cuisine, mainly Arabic, East African, Lebanese, Turkish, and Indian food. Dishes are often based on chicken, fish, and lamb, as well as the staple of rice. Omani food tends to be less spicy and served in quite large portions. Most Omani dishes contain spices, herbs, and marinades. Omani sweets are well-known throughout the region. Halwa, a hot, semi-solid substance which behaves a little like honey and is eaten with a spoon is the most popular one. Rukhal bread, eaten at any meal, is a thin, round bread originally baked over a fire made from palm leaves.
